Just to give you guys an update on our daughters nail Biopsy
appointment today with Orthopedic surgeon. After looking at her nail and
the fact that it has stopped widening from last two months she feels
going for Biopsy at this stage is too much and will cause permanent
damage to the nail. So again she recommended to wait for few more months
maybe another 6 months and observe for change and then decide to go for
Biopsy.
I am planning to get another Dermatologist opinion, not sure what to do.
Thanks, Resh

Resh,
After considering it for a week, I decided to bring my daughter in for nail biopsy. It was done last Friday. The nail specialist agreed to do it for her because she knew I was very worried. She said it was important enough for us to get it done. The biopsy didn't bother my daughter too much except for the local anesthesia. She is recovering well and didn't need to take any pain medication. The doctor is amazed at how well she is taking it.
Her doctor just called me back several minutes ago. She received an email from the pathologist that it was a nevus that she removed from her nail. As far as the nail, she said the worst case is a split line in the nail and we won't know until several months later.
I am very happy about the news and now I can finally leave the worry behind.
Since it has stopped widening on your daughter's nail, I believe that it is a nevus too. Best to you and your daughter.

Thats a great news Pei. I am very happy for you.
I have been thinking whole day and kind of thinking to go ahead with biopsy too. I have another appointment for her Toe nail next week and then I am going to discuss with my Dermatologist again. However as I am expecting my second child in early November I will hold off till then and will get her Biopsy done during her winter break in Dec that will give us another 3 months to observe and make our dicision.
Thanks for writing. Resh

Hello Resh,

I saw the history of your post from 2011. Hope all is well with your son and that you are behind the worries of the nail mole. I wanted to ask if you could share if you went with the biopsy or not and if so how that went ?

I am of Indian origin as well (from India) and my 6 yr old son has a mole on his thumb nail that appears as a 2mm line on his nail and we've been visiting dermatologists and are in the same dilemma as you were.

I learnt that there aren't many doctors who can delicately do the nail biopsy on children without damaging the nail, so any references would also help

Your feedback would be helpful and appreciated!

Thanks,

I am also facing the same dilemma with my 3 year old. She has a fine line on her toe nail. Resh & Caringdad can you please provide an update from your side. Did you visit the Dr. and got biopsy done? Hope its good news.

Thank you.

I believe they did have the biopsy done on the nail. I would trust a pediatric dermatologist to take a look and decide on the biopsy. Being affiliated with a teaching university is also recommended. Let us know how things go.
