March will be my 2 year anniversary since being diagnosed with stage 1A melanoma. It was located on the inside of my upper right arm. Clark level II, breslow .2mm (so very low risk).
I had full body photography (since I have so many moles), and have had a few biopsies over the past 2 years – all benign.
On Friday I went to my PCP for my annual checkup. She found 2 areas of concern – an enlarged thyroid and a small lump in my right axilla. I am having ultra sounds on both areas tomorrow.
Many family members have also had melanoma. I lost my Aunt to it 2 years ago after she fought it for 15 years. I am 56 yo & with blonde hair/blue eyes/fair skinned woman who spent many summers on LI swimming, playing tennis & golf – so I’ve had my share of burns.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome….stay tuned…I will let you know what I find out…

good luck to you; does ultrasound show them what they need to see? if so, I wonder why it isn’t used more often instead of the high-radiation stuff like CT scans? did your initial pathology say anything about regression? I know melanoma can do anything, but a 0.2mm without regression, ulceration, mitotic activity, etc. . .seems very unlikely for spreadFebruary 25, 2013 at 5:14 pm #59337 No regression or ulceration. I’m not sure what they will find out. I’m more worried about a second primary, and not that the first one spread. Thanks for the good wishesFebruary 25, 2013 at 5:22 pm #59338cohanjaParticipant you’d think with the additional biopsies you had over the past 2 years. . the most suspicious looking things already were removed and were benign. so you’d think some other primary wouldn’t have been missed – would have to be pretty innocent looking. it’s hard to not jump ahead of yourself and waiting is the worst part. the busier you can stay to keep your mind from wandering to the worst, the better. is that something they can tell, whether something is from the first one or a second/different one?February 25, 2013 at 5:38 pm #59339 My understanding is that they would be able to tell the difference between a new one & one that has spread. The one I had 2 years ago was very normal looking – no ABCDE about it. Actually, my derm wasn’t even going to biopsy it, but I pointed it out to her & mentioned that my PCP had inquired about it.
I’m not freaking out. I’m taking everything in stride, and will do whatever needs to be done. I work out daily, so that always helps to relieve any stress. Work keeps me busy too.February 25, 2013 at 9:46 pm #59340Icegurl470Participant
Not sure about the lymph-nodes, but I had an MRI that had shown an enlarged thyroid, and I was dx with stage 1b melanoma around the same time I was dx with hypothyroid. Having had melanoma puts you at greater risk for developing not just more melanoma, but other types of cancer as well. I was worried because some research suggest that melanoma may be especially linked to breast and thyroid cancer, but I was told that there are many different causes for enlarged thyroid, most of which weren’t serious.February 25, 2013 at 10:30 pm #59341wpatterson4Participant I know it’s hard to remain calm and carefree when something like this happens; we’ve all been there. The chances of this being metastasized melanoma are slim. I have a hard LN in my neck that scared the hell out of me about a year and a half ago when I found it. I hope you get the results back quickly.February 25, 2013 at 11:46 pm #59342Catherine PooleKeymaster I agree that it is highly unlikely to be connected. But please let us know how things go, we’ll be thinking of you during this stressful time.February 28, 2013 at 1:38 pm #59343barb3246Participant How did you make out with your ultrasounds Cathy? I hope you got good news!March 1, 2013 at 1:59 pm #59344 So far, the one in my right axilla is fine. I am still waiting on the results from my thyroid US. I should hear today. Thanks for the support!March 1, 2013 at 9:19 pm #59345 I am scheduled for a FNA on the 18th for the growth on my thyroid. It is 12mmx8mmx7mm. I also need to see a Breast specialists in 6 months to keep an eye on things in my right axilla.March 9, 2013 at 7:28 am #59346steve659Participant PCP for my annual checkup done for keeping the health better, therefore ultra sound also is an essential role in the lower or upper abdominal cases therefore it is better to examine by the senior physician doctor with better way.
