I believe Dr. Mihm said an insitu takes a few years to become something deeper.

I am so confused… I suppose it’s the nature of the melanoma beast, but there seems to be so many differing opinions about atypical moles and their relationsihp to full-blown melanoma. My skin cancer doc (who i adore and see monthly) says there is no scientific evidence proving that moderately atypical /dysplastic nevi will ever morph into melanoma. My specialist at Cancer Care Alliance Iwho I also think the world of and see once every quarter) told me the other day that he believes moderatley-to-severely atypical dysplastic nevi are much more likely to become melanoma and that it’s not always obvious to the human eye.

Every time I turn aroud, it seems like I’m having another biopsy because something looks a bit odd and, with the exception of one biopsy on my thigh a few weeks ago, all the rest have come back as moderately atypical and were excised. God knows what every other mole on my body would come back as. It was somewhat comforting believeing that even if my other moles are atypical, that doesn’t mean they’re ticking timebombs. Now, I’m not so sure. Any thoughts?

Most of my moles looks strange. They are uneven, a few colors, not symmetrical, etc. However, now if they are not changing, I won’t cut them off. If they change, I do. That is my personal rule. I know that most of my moles will come back with some atypia but I don’t think that means they are going to become cancer at some point. It is just me and how my moles look under the microscope.

I will freak sometimes and think, wow this one is just strange looking, but then I go back 2 yrs and find a pic and it is still the same. Strange, but the same. If it were melanoma, most likely it would continue to grow and get bigger/stranger, etc.

It’s not easy, but this is what I keep telling myself. My derm shares these views so we work together, I guess.

Sounds like an excellent plan, Jenni. Thanks, L

Wild. It’s too bad no one has invented some magic means of super-early detection. If the docs could find these things even sooner, a lot of lives could be saved, huh?
