Participantš Well, after a nice, long period without getting cut on, my doc found a black spot in a mole that wasn’t there the month before. (Yup, I am checked monthly.) This particular mole was one of four that was specially photographed by a specialist at the University of Washington two years ago. The other three were removed by WLE with 3mm margins as they all came back as moderately dysplastic. Needless to say, I am more than a little anxious about this one, but have to hope that even if it is bad news (it would be my fourth melanoma in two years), that we got it really early. I hate this damn disease. At any rate, I should hear back on the biopsy results later this week. My doc did say that the pigmentation in the deep shave biopsy didn’t extend far at all, which is a good sign. Fingers are crossed. Hope all of you are doing well and I’ll report back when I have news to share.July 29, 2013 at 10:30 am #61977waspkfd

ParticipantSorry, hope it turns out well. Fourth melanoma in 2 years, is it familial/genetic? Seems like you and the Dr are ok with deep shave biopsies? I’ve heard some say nothing but excisional, but then I’ve also heard deep shave it ok too. July 29, 2013 at 3:23 pm #61979Lisa P
ParticipantNo family history or evidence in the BRACA gene test, not a ton of time in the sun (a few good burns as a teen), yet here we are. My doc does deep shave biopsies if a punch isn’t big enough and then, depending on the results that come back, does a full WLE. That’s why it appears I’ve been dancing with a bear… July 29, 2013 at 3:27 pm #61980cohanja
ParticipantIs BRACA the same as p16 genetic defect for melanoma (CDKN2A)? No family history and not a ton of sun. . but 4 different primaries? Maybe Iām underestimating the likelihood of having more than 1 primary. July 29, 2013 at 5:09 pm #61981Lisa P
ParticipantAs far as I know, mine are all primaries as they were all contained and less than 1mm. I took the BRACA test which is for ovarian and breast cancer mainly, but was told there’s also a marker for the melanoma gene that showed up as negative in my results. I don’t think its the BRACA test is the one they’d do for the purpose of seeking melanoma. L July 30, 2013 at 10:32 pm #61982Lisa P
ParticipantThankfully and most gratefully, the pathology report shows mild atypia and, because the deep shave biopsy got the margins, I don’t need additional cutting. Hooray! I feel so relieved. Another bullet dodged… Thank goodness for all of you out there who help me navigate the waters when they’re rough. I can’t tell you how much your knowledge and support means. I hope all is well and thanks again, LisaJuly 30, 2013 at 11:22 pm #61983cohanja
ParticipantExcellent. Actually my Dr doesn’t even re-excise mildly atypical, even when margins are involved -
