Today, FDA announced 2 proposed important restrictions on tanning beds, most importantly restricting their use to adults 18 and older, and improving cautionary information for participating adults. It includes information on the increased risk of developing melanoma, especially from early exposure to tanning devices. Comments are solicited. For more information and questions, see the following websites – note these proposed regulations will likely go into effect following the open questioning period of a month or so. Among violation penalties is included criminal prosecution.

This is great, BUT, enforcement will be very difficult like cigarettes. And like smoking we need a peer pressure movement to at least get the kids informed. Our society still values a “healthy” tan and if you look at any old movies, smoking was sexy too. A cultural shift is needed and I’m not sure how we do that.

And we need the Gold’s Gyms, Planet Fitness etc. to get rid of their tanning booths!
