ParticipantJust diagnosed a week ago..went for routine mammogram and a lump (lymph node) was noted in the upper corner of the picture on my left breast. Went back for more imaging, was immediately biopsied and it is melanoma, metastasis to lymph node. I had a melanoma, Stage 1 removed from my back about 5 years ago.Thought it was minor and had been taken care of.(I am 63, raising my grandson – he’s 11) I have an appointment for Mar 1 with an oncologist. Meanwhile, I am trying not to freak out, waiting for the appt and further scans. Have been reading the forums , trying to educate myself on all the options. I have insurance coverage with Kaiser Permanente in southern California. Do any of you have experience with Kaiser? I have always loved the care both I and my family have gotten from Kaiser. I am just very anxious, in the “waiting zone”..I needed to come here and join you all!
Thanks,
Lauralea

KeymasterSorry no one has responded, but I hope you do have a good experience with Kaiser. Will they let you get an opinion from an expert in melanoma? That is a strong suggestion from us. Let us know what is suggested for further treatment and we can weigh in. In the meantime, try yoga and/or mindful meditation to get you through this anxious time. You can also discuss antianxiety meds and antidepressants for support of your mental well being. February 25, 2015 at 7:01 pm #66618LauraleaT
ParticipantThank you, Catherine. I will definitely be asking about a melanoma specialist. Kaiser ends to be very current in their treatment protocols, but I certainly want to approach the doctor well-informed. I am currently on an anti-depressant, a mild dose – may see about upping that. I am doing my best not to project and live in the moment for now. I will report in after my appointment Monday. Meanwhile -I have an excited 11 year old’s birthday party this weekend!
Thanks again

ParticipantWaiting is the hardest part! I’m hoping that the scans you have are clear.
I wish your grandson a very happy birthday.
And i wish you have a nice weekend without to much worrying.
A child’s smile usually makes everything so much better

ParticipantThings have moved along quickly -saw the oncologist, who ordered a ton of imaging. I’ve had a PET, MRI of my brain and a CT. Also have surgery scheduled for Wednesday for axillary node dissection. My scans have come back clean – YAY!! – the oncologist talked about interferon, but I am not doing that since my scans are clear. Never thought I’d be anxious to have surgery, but considering the alternative, I’m ready. I have read every post on this board and am grateful for my current diagnosis, I know it can change at any time. Also appreciated the helpful info regarding post-op care – drain etc. I will update after surgery and the pathology report comes back. Best wishes to everyone here and in our struggles.
