I was diagnosed with Melanoma stage 2b four years ago and my Consultant advised me on not trying for a baby for at least 2 years due to the chance of reoccurrence. I waited 3 due to anxiety issues but suffered a miscarriage at 7 weeks.
There seems to be mixed messages when looking on the internet as to whether Melanoma can be caused by hormones etc so I am again very anxious as to whether to try again for a baby. My Consultant doesn’t seem to understand my issues with pregnancy and just says there is no certain proof that pregnancy causes a reoccurrence so go ahead and try again.
I have read and re-read the internet and found many people that say it is safe to try again but there are also instances where Doctors have advised against trying once you have suffered from Melanomas but because nobody can give me a definite answer, I am still anxious as wouldn’t like to fall pregnant and then the Cancer come back.
What is the latest advice that Melanoma specialists have been giving to forum users on here as I am aware that medical advice and research improves all the time?
The usual time for recurrence is 2 years, so most tell you to wait two years before getting pregnant. Large studies have found little or no correlation between hormone levels and melanoma incidence. The main thing is you don’t want to experience a recurrence while pregnant, hence waiting 2 years. I would also make sure you have regular body checks/skin exams by you and your doctor. Good luck!
